The RimWorld Diaries (Entry 1)
Entry 1
Today I crash landed on a planet. I don’t know It’s name. I don’t know where it is. I don’t know how long it's been since the Star Liner Vania left port. All I know now is that we have to survive, and maybe someday escape from this god forsaken place.
Afternoon
After landing and working my way out of my escape pod, I quickly met up with Jon and a surprise survivor. Yumi. We decided to not waste any time for now and instead laid out some quick plans on how we would survey our area, and collect whatever resources we could salvage from the wreckage and our escape pods.
Thankfully we found a decent collection of items. Between what we could find and what we could salvage, we collected enough meals to last us at least a week. We also found a revolver, a hunting rifle, a knife, a small cleaning robot, a bit of wood, steel, silver, and a bit of medicine. Yumi found a small animal that reminded us of a Gecko, she’s decided to keep it as a pet and named it Patton.
We quickly realized we would need to split up all the work required to make this arid environment hospitable. We decided as a group that I would take on planting what seeds and foods could be found or salvaged from our meals and supplies. Jon got the role of chef and Hunter. Yumi, who apparently has some experience as an engineer, has been chosen to take care of our construction needs.
Weapons were divided between us, myself the revolver, Jon the hunting rifle, and Yumi the knife. We decided on a safe enough looking area to settle, near some seemingly fertile soil for the crops and partially surrounded by natural cliffs for protection. We all agreed on areas to store our supplies, after hauling them where they needed to go we split up to do our work.
I’d surveyed the area we had that seemed suitable to grow crops. I believe I’ll be able to grow rice, potatoes, corn, hay, and strawberries. I’ve decided to partition the crops in such a way that we’ll hopefully have everything we need. Of course I’ll wait to plant the haygrass until we have the rest set up and growing. As much as I’d love to keep Yumi’s pet Gecko well fed with, well whatever it is they eat, I felt it important to grow something fresh for us as a group first.
I’m quite tired now though, I think I’ll take a bit of a nap. I realize there is much to be done, but I’ve already gotten a start on the crops, some corn to be exact, and I feel we all deserve a bit of a lie down after the day we’ve had up to this point. I shall return to my duties after I feel a bit more rested.
Dusk
Yumi and I had a bit of a chance to talk for the first time after crashing down here. Apparently she was an Apprentice Oracle before boarding The Vania. She seems to have a bit of a love for intellectual pursuits as well as working with her hands. We talked for some time about a common interest, Chess, and she explained in some detail the intricacies of making sandals. I never would’ve guessed someone as young as her would be so passionate about such things.
I noticed Yumi and Jon had used most of what wood we salvaged earlier today, At least they put it to good use, they’ve already gotten a proper station for us to cook on set up, as well as a handful of walls to help protect us and our supplies.
I had decided I’d take a bit of a walk around the area, both to help me relax and to collect what wood I can find from the local fauna. It’s pretty late now, the sun has gone down maybe a couple hours ago. I suppose I should head on back to base and continue my work. I hope what wood I was able to hobble together lasts us a while. This place seems to be basically dead.
Sunrise
Seeing as how the sun has risen and all of the corn has been sown, I’ve decided I may as well lie down again. Hopefully I’ll be able to sleep a bit better now that Yumi has gotten some more walls up around our sleeping areas. Maybe soon she’ll be able to complete our rooms, or get some roofs over us. I doubt we’ll see much rain around here, but I’d rather not be caught trying to sleep in whatever weather this place conjures up.
Yumi seems to be adjusting surprisingly well, we talked again about our love of chess. I’d love it if we could somehow get a table or set we could play with. I didn’t get the chance to talk with Jon much today. I suppose we were both busy with our own work. I do hope he’s adjusting well to our new settlement here. Come to think of it, we may be here awhile. I’ll have to think of a name for us!
