The RimWorld Diaries (Entry 3)

Entry 3

Dusk

I slept a little better today. Even with Yumi working on the shelter around me. Maybe I’m getting used to life on this Rimworld. Sadly, it would seem Jon and Yumi have already eaten the fresh game Jon had hunted yesterday. At least the packaged, preserved, meals we scavenged from the wreckage are reasonably palatable. I guess I should continue my work in the fields. We should consider some form of recreation for all of us. Something to lift our spirits I know I could certainly use something to help and keep my mind off of everything.

I asked Jon and Yumi about what I saw yesterday, they both say they haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary. Guess it really was just my eyes playing tricks. Either way, I think I’ll try and keep a look out while sowing the fields today.

Night

I had to take a break from my work a bit earlier than I would have liked. It’s not all bad news though, we’d received a visitor!

Sadly, it wasn’t all good news either. Our visitor, Philly, told us that she is a bit of a wanderer. Apparently there are all kinds of people on this planet. Tribals with primitive tools, regular everyday folk, Royals with massive settlements, and even people of science. Maybe we’ll be able to find a way off of this planet sooner than we had thought. Though, maybe not. Philly did warn us that most factions aren’t particularly helpful. Most seem to have a taste for war. We all talked for a bit, but it was getting quite late and Philly insisted on leaving us.

After we’ve said our goodbyes, I couldn’t help but daydream of being able to set up trade with some potential neighbors, someone who may be able to help us escape. But I’m also left here to wonder, what the hell happened here? Where did all these people come from? Why do they speak a language so similar to our own? Philly wasn’t able to tell us much, though I feel she knew more than she was willing to say. All she could really give us was that this planet is known as Earth.

On a more positive note, I’ve finished up sowing our rice. Now to finish the potatoes and, what I’m most excited for, the strawberries. I’m gonna have to put all of that on hold for the time being. Our stock of wood appears to be dangerously low. There doesn’t seem to be much wood left in the area. I could probably harvest some from the small cacti like plants dotted around, but it seems like it’d be such a waste. Guess I have no other option.

Early Morning

Had a quick chat with Yumi, she thinks she can help out our wood shortage by building tools and a workbench. She says this will allow us to turn the stone scattered around the area into blocks suitable for building and crafting. I’m not sure how she expects to do that out of nothing but wood, and maybe a bit of steel? Regardless, if she thinks it’ll work, I’ll give it a shot. Only problem is, even with the wood I was able to scrounge together, we won’t have enough for her to finish it. Guess Yumi will be tearing down some of our shelter while I go haul some extra steel for her.

Late Morning

Yumi is in some kind of mood. She came to me while I was sowing the potatoes to tell me that her plan had worked! I congratulated, and thanked her before taking a short moment to chat with her about chess. Not having much else to do I finished up most of the potatoes and then planted a small patch of strawberries.

But then, as I was heading toward my still unfinished room, she started yelling at me! Some nonsense about carrying the entire colony on her back. We have to work together if we’re gonna make it through this. And to think I had secretly snuck away to draft some plans for a chess table we could use. The nerve!
